@Oita City first came into contact with Western culture in the 16th century.
During this period the city was introduced to Western medicine, music,
and theater primarily through Portuguese influence. With this history as
the backdrop, a sister city relationship with Aveiro, Portugal was inaugurated
in 1978.
@In 1979, stimulated by technological exchange involving Shin-Nippon Steel's Oita plant, a sister city affiliation was formed with Wuhan, China.
@Oita next embarked on a sister city relationship with Austin, Texas in
1990. Austin is home to many semi-conductor related businesses and the
University of Texas, one of the United States leading institutes of higher
learning. Oita and Austin share similar interests in both industry and
culture.
@Through these sister city ties Oita City is actively developing exchanges which cross into the fields of culture, economics, and sports. Friendships which break through the language barrier are being developed between citizens, students, teachers, and entrepreneurs.
